Cham Island Complete Guide:
Independent Route to a UNESCO Paradise

📅2026.04.04 Updated

01 Island Overview:
The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Cua Dai Port, Cham Island (Cù Lao Chàm) is a cluster of eight islands in the South China Sea. It is renowned for having some of the most transparent waters in all of Vietnam.

Designated as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2009, this is more than just a tourist destination. The island maintains strict environmental protections, including a daily visitor cap of 3,000 people and a total ban on plastic bags.

With a history as a vital stop on the maritime silk road, the island still breathes with the rustic charms of fishing village life. It stands in stark contrast to the refined elegance of Hoi An—here, nature is raw, and the textures of the alleys are weathered by the sea.

Its beauty is preserved through strict limits and conservation efforts.

NoteRunner's Insight: Island Resolution

If Hoi An's Old Town is “polished history,” then Cham Island is a place where “raw nature and living energy collide.”

You'll feel it when you run across the island. Step away from the pier, and you're met with concrete alleys worn by salt air, stray cattle, and deep shadows cast by the intense tropical sun. There is no artificial sweetness here; only the dry, honest texture of a remote island.

The 3,000-person cap feels like a necessary levee—one that preserves this rare balance between silence and untamed nature.

02 Access: How to Reach Cham Island
—— 5 Steps for a Successful Independent Trip

The Reality of Access

Reaching the island independently means navigating the somewhat confusing port system at Cua Dai.

The port complex has multiple buildings but lacks clear, consistent signage. For a first-timer, finding the correct desk can be challenging. Based on our research, we've outlined these 5 steps to ensure a smooth journey.

1
STEP 1Day Before

Request Boat Booking at Your Hotel

Simply ask your Hoi An hotel or villa staff to book a speedboat for the next day. You'll receive a voucher or booking screenshot via WhatsApp. This serves as your ticket for the trip.
💡
POINT
Last-minute bookings might not be possible. Always request at least one day in advance.
2
STEP 207:20

Transfer to Cua Dai Port

A transfer car will pick you up at the time specified by your hotel. Once you arrive at Cua Dai Port, the boat company staff (e.g., Tour Cù Lao Chàm) will greet you. Simply show your voucher.
💡
POINT
Be prepared for a quick hand luggage check for plastic bags—a strict island rule.
3
STEP 308:00

Departure and Crossing

Fill out the passenger manifest and you're ready to go. The 8:00 AM speedboat is powerful, cutting through waves with an intensity that heightens the excitement. Journey time: 30 mins.
Boarding the boat at Cua Dai Port

4
STEP 408:30

Confirm Your Return Time and Spot

Upon arrival, locate the reception desk shown in the photo. This is where you'll check in for your return boat. The pier isn't huge, but knowing exactly where to go for the trip back ensures a smooth transition.
⚠️
Critical Success Factor

5
STEP 513:00

Return to Cua Dai Port

After fully enjoying the island, most visitors return to the mainland by around 1:00 PM. This schedule allows plenty of time for afternoon exploration in Hoi An.
Boarding for the return trip

Returning by around 1:00 PM

NoteReal Report: The High Risk of On-the-Day Booking

Based on our visit during a weekday in late March, we can confirm that attempting to book on arrival is a gamble you likely shouldn't take.

Even outside of the peak May–August season, every speedboat we saw was fully booked. There is no clear ticket booth selling same-day passes to walk-ins. To guarantee your spot and ensure you can return as planned, booking through your hotel the day before is a non-negotiable rule of island travel.

VSIndependent vs Organized Tour

CriteriaIndependent (Recommended)Organized Tour
FreedomTotal control. Stop where you want, stay as long as you like.Fixed schedule. Follow the group at every turn.
CostApprox. 700k–900k VND (incl. transport, bike, fuel). From 750k VND (incl. transport, lunch).
ExperienceA dense, personal exploration of hidden alleys and cliffs.

A pre-packaged experience from start to finish. You’re herded to set group restaurants and have no say in where you stop, when you rest, or which hidden alley you explore.

* Note: The rigid, minute-by-minute group schedule can be a source of stress, undermining the island's natural sense of freedom.

“Go independent for total freedom. But if it's your first time and you're feeling unsure, a tour is a decent way to get your bearings.”

For the Veteran Traveler: The Charm of the Wooden Boat

If you are a traveler who isn't seeking efficiency, there is another way: the “Wooden Boat.” There is almost no official schedule; these boats depart quietly from the base of old bridges in Hoi An or the corners of Cua Dai Port, carrying supplies and locals.

The journey takes 2 hours. A distance that a speedboat covers in 30 minutes, the wooden boat traverses slowly with a steady engine drone. However, those 120 minutes might be exactly what you need to feel the true pulse of Cham Island as a former maritime silk road hub.

※ Note: Choosing this for a day trip will leave you with very little time on the island. It is a luxury reserved for those staying overnight.

03 The Blue Haven: A Complete Beach Guide

Cham Island's XEP Beach from above. Lush greenery meets crystal clear water.

XEP Beach

The Abyss of Azure. Pristine nature at its absolute finest.

View from the road descending to XEP Beach.

Beach entrance from road

Looking out at the transparent ocean from XEP Beach shore.

Vivid blue shoreline

XEP Beach is the undisputed crown jewel of Cham Island, a place that truly defines “hidden paradise.” Away from the crowds of Da Nang and Hoi An, it offers a deep, mesmerizing blue that draws you in.

As part of a strictly protected marine reserve, you won't find any shops, toilets, or showers here. All that exists is the sound of the wind, the rhythm of the waves, and the dense emerald forest blanketing the island.

It's about a 15-minute walk from the main pier. The moment this breathtaking view emerges after a short trek through a gentle paved slope, you'll know why this island is a must-visit destination.

Runner's Tips & Advice

Being 'completely natural' means you need to come prepared. Be sure to stock up on water and snacks near the pier before heading out. While there's some shade from the trees, the tropical sun is intense. For runners, the 15-minute walk is an ideal warm-up jog, but stay mindful of the heat reflection from the road surface.
Cham Island Bãi Ong. Blue sky, palm trees, and lined up beach chairs.

Bãi Ong

Comfort Meets Openness. The island's most well-equipped beach.

Crystal clear water at Bãi Ong, showcasing high transparency.

Ultramarine shoreline

Bãi Ong is the largest and most developed beach on the island. It's the go-to spot for those seeking comfort, featuring restaurants, beach chairs, parasols, and even clean public toilets and showers.

A 15-minute walk along the coastal road from the pier brings you here. On your way, you'll pass through inlets crowded with colorful traditional Vietnamese wooden fishing boats, a sight that evokes the rustic soul of island life.

If your priority is relaxing with full facilities, Bãi Ong is the 'correct' choice. The water is exceptionally clear with almost no rocks or seaweed, making it safe and enjoyable for families and groups.

Runner's Tips & Advice

This is the best place to end your island activities because it's one of the few spots with decent showers and toilets. The paved return path to the pier serves as a perfect cooldown walk or jog. Experience suggests that spending your final hours here before the return boat is the smartest way to manage your time.
White sand and transparent water at Bai Xep.

Bai Xep (South Side)

A quiet stretch beyond the main pier. Silence and white sand.

Beach through the greenery

Vast white sand stretch at Bai Xep under the blue sky.

Expansive shoreline

While it's just as stunning as the popular XEP Beach, this southern stretch remains significantly quieter.

A 20-minute walk from the pier, the slightly longer distance keeps the crowds at bay. Here, you have the luxury of enjoying a vast, beautiful sandy beach almost entirely to yourself.

Visit here when you want to completely disconnect from the world and surrender yourself to the sound of the ocean.

Runner's Tips & Advice

Located about 3km round-trip from the pier. The route offers pleasant elevation changes, making it a rewarding destination for a short run. It's only 5 minutes further than the main Xep Beach, but the privacy you get is worth the extra steps. Shade is limited, so bring extra water from the pier.
Stone Giant Beach (Bãi Chồng) showing resort vibes with parasols.

Bãi Chồng (Stone Giant Beach)

Laid-Back Luxury. The island's largest beach with full resort facilities.

Relaxing in the shade with comfortable beach chairs.

Resort-style relaxation

The long stretching shoreline of Bãi Chồng.

Vast beach panorama

Alongside Bãi Ong, Bãi Chồng is one of the only two beaches on the island with full facilities. With restaurants, beach chairs, and clean showers, it ensures a comfortable island stay.

It's too far to walk from the main pier, so a motorbike or boat is necessary. Since speedboats can dock directly here, it's often the base for many organized tours.

While it boasts the most parasols and the widest beach area, keep in mind that it can get busy when tour groups arrive. Also, the water clarity, while high, might feel slightly more modest compared to the untouched beauty of XEP Beach.

Runner's Tips & Advice

An ideal final destination after exploring the island's steep northern roads by motorbike. You can wash off the tropical sweat in the showers here before heading back to the pier for your boat ride—a strategic move based on first-hand experience.

04 Island Transport: Motorbike & Epic Roads

Motorbike Rental Survival Guide

To truly explore Cham Island, a motorbike is your only real option. You won't find dedicated rental shops; instead, most bikes are rented out by local restaurants or family-run guesthouses (nhà nghỉ).

⚠️ Don't Trust Google Maps 100%

Markers labeled “Motorbike Rental” on the map might lead to nowhere. When in doubt, ask the locals at a nearby family-run guesthouse. Tell them you're looking for a bike, and they'll likely pull one out from the back of their house.

Pricing & Negotiation

  • Full Day: Approx. 200,000 VND (~$8 USD)
  • Half Day (e.g., until 1 PM): 70,000 – 100,000 VND

※ Prices might start high. Don't be afraid to negotiate, especially if you have limited time.

💡 Runner’s Experience

I struggled to find a formal rental shop, so I ended up asking at a local family-run guesthouse (nhà nghỉ). They quickly rented me a bike for 200k VND. Looking back, I could have probably negotiated for less since I only needed it for a few hours, but these small interactions are what make island travel authentic.

Cruising along the panoramic cliffside road of Cham Island.
Must Explore

Cliffside Views Accessible Only by Bike

The Northern Loop. Where the turquoise ocean meets jagged cliffs.

Leaving the main pier's bustle behind and heading north reveals a world reachable only by two wheels. The paved road along the northeastern cliffs offers a sense of freedom like no other.

With the South China Sea on your right and dramatic mountain faces on your left, it's an incredible drive. I can confidently say that riding this route alone makes a trip to Cham Island worthwhile.
The spectacular cliff panorama from Eo Gió viewpoint.

Eo Gió (Windy Cape)

Eo Gió, meaning “Windy Gate,” is the island's most iconic viewpoint. Park your bike and take a short walk to see the crashing white waves against the cliffs and an endless horizon.

🚲 Access Note

Follow the “Eo Gió” signs from the pier. Note that while Google Maps shows a full loop through the fishing village, the northern part of the village road is often blocked (likely for military zones). Most visitors will need to backtrack the same way they came.

Breathtaking panorama near the Cham Island lighthouse area.

Lighthouse Panorama

You can ride up near the Đèn Biển Cù Lao Chàm (Cham Island Lighthouse). This higher vantage point offers a powerful perspective of the ocean, distinct from the view at Eo Gió.

⚠️ Access Warning

The lighthouse building itself is fenced off and typically closed to the public. You can enjoy the views from the vicinity, but don't expect to go inside.

05 Fishing Villages & Island Life

Overview of Bãi Hương fishing village nestled along the coast.
Authentic Island Life

The Silence of Bãi Hương: A Glimpse into the Past

The quieter side of the island. Authenticity away from the pier.

Stepping away from the main pier (Bãi Làng) and riding half across the island reveals a different rhythm. Bãi Hương is where the true, rustic life of Cham Island remains quietly preserved, far from the reach of tour groups.

This sleepy fishing village keeps a slow pace, with an atmosphere of total tranquility. The village itself is compact—a single street that can be walked in under five minutes—yet it's dense with the authentic texture of coastal life. From the smell of drying laundry to the distant laughter of locals, Bãi Hương offers a rare look at an island that hasn't changed in decades.
The main street of Bãi Hương, where locals gather at small cafes.

Life Along the Main Street

The village street winds gently along the coastline. You'll find small family-run cafes and simple eateries shaded by lush trees, where the community gathers in the heat of the day.

This is “Island Time” in its purest form. Grabbing a cold drink and watching the ocean from a simple wooden chair offers a sense of peace that digital life simply cannot provide.
Traditionally shaped boats at Bãi Hương's quiet beach area.

The Original Coastal Scene

Brightly painted Vietnamese wooden boats and circular bamboo coracles (thuyền thúng) line the quiet white sands of Bãi Hương.

In the early morning or at dusk, you'll see fishermen tending to their nets, a scene of timeless labor that highlights the island's connection to the sea. This is the original landscape of Cham Island, unchanged and honest.
NoteA Local Encounter

Riding through this quiet village, I had an unexpected encounter. As I slowed down near a group of locals, an older woman suddenly called out “Oi!” and gestured toward my bike.

Despite the language barrier, it was clear she needed a lift. She hop on the back of my bike without a second's hesitation, and I ended up as a voluntary “free taxi” for the next 6km back to the main pier. Her laughter drifting over my shoulder, casual and completely unbothered—that was the moment I understood what travel is really for.

08 FAQ & Practical Tips

Q

Can I travel to Cham Island independently?

A
Yes, you can access the island independently by taking a speedboat or public ferry from Cua Dai Port. RITOTABI recommends this style as it allows you to explore the island at your own pace without being tied to a tour group.
Q

Can I buy speedboat tickets at the port on the same day?

A
It is extremely difficult. There is no clear ticket booth for walk-ins at the port, and most seats are pre-booked through hotels. We strongly recommend asking your villa or hotel to book your tickets and transfer at least one day in advance.
Q

When is the best time to visit Cham Island?

A
The best window is from March to September, when visibility is at its peak and the seas are calm. High season is from May to August. Avoid visiting from October to February due to monsoon-led boat cancellations.
Q

Where can I have lunch on the island?

A
You can enjoy fresh seafood at local restaurants in the main fishing village (Bãi Làng) or at the developed beaches like Bãi Ong and Bãi Chồng. There are several family-run eateries that welcome independent travelers.
Q

Are there ATMs on the island? Do I need cash?

A
There are NO ATMs on Cham Island. You will need cash for motorbike rentals, meals, and local purchases. Ensure you withdraw enough Vietnamese Dong in Hoi An before your departure.
Q

Are there changing rooms and showers on the beaches?

A
Bãi Ong and Bãi Chồng (Stone Giant Beach) have shower and toilet facilities for restaurant guests. However, natural beaches like XEP Beach have no facilities at all, so please plan accordingly.
Q

How do I get from the pier to the beaches?

A
Bãi Ong and XEP Beach are within a 15-20 minute walk from the main pier. For more distant spots like Bãi Chồng or for a full island tour, renting a motorbike near the pier is the standard choice.
Q

Can I rent a motorbike on Cham Island?

A
Yes, motorbikes can be rented from local family-run guesthouses (nhà nghỉ) or restaurants near the pier for approximately 200,000 VND per day. Since there are no formal rental shops, simply ask nearby residents or your lunch spot staff.
Q

Can I ride a motorbike all the way around the island?

A
No, a complete loop is not possible. While some maps show a connected road, the northern section is blocked due to military zones. After enjoying the scenic northern roads, you will need to head back the same way.
Q

Is it worth staying overnight on the island?

A
Generally, we recommend using Hoi An as your base for a day trip. The island lacks luxury hotels, and accommodations are limited to basic family-run guesthouses (nhà nghỉ) with modest facilities.
