Cham Island Complete Guide:
Independent Route to a UNESCO Paradise
01 Island Overview:
The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Cua Dai Port, Cham Island (Cù Lao Chàm) is a cluster of eight islands in the South China Sea. It is renowned for having some of the most transparent waters in all of Vietnam.
Designated as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2009, this is more than just a tourist destination. The island maintains strict environmental protections, including a daily visitor cap of 3,000 people and a total ban on plastic bags.
With a history as a vital stop on the maritime silk road, the island still breathes with the rustic charms of fishing village life. It stands in stark contrast to the refined elegance of Hoi An—here, nature is raw, and the textures of the alleys are weathered by the sea.
The waters of Cham Island are protected as a UNESCO reserve.
Its beauty is preserved through strict limits and conservation efforts.
If Hoi An's Old Town is “polished history,” then Cham Island is a place where “raw nature and living energy collide.”
You'll feel it when you run across the island. Step away from the pier, and you're met with concrete alleys worn by salt air, stray cattle, and deep shadows cast by the intense tropical sun. There is no artificial sweetness here; only the dry, honest texture of a remote island.
The 3,000-person cap feels like a necessary levee—one that preserves this rare balance between silence and untamed nature.
02 Access: How to Reach Cham Island
—— 5 Steps for a Successful Independent Trip
⛵The Reality of Access
Reaching the island independently means navigating the somewhat confusing port system at Cua Dai.
The port complex has multiple buildings but lacks clear, consistent signage. For a first-timer, finding the correct desk can be challenging. Based on our research, we've outlined these 5 steps to ensure a smooth journey.

Return to Cua Dai Port
Returning by around 1:00 PM
Based on our visit during a weekday in late March, we can confirm that attempting to book on arrival is a gamble you likely shouldn't take.
Even outside of the peak May–August season, every speedboat we saw was fully booked. There is no clear ticket booth selling same-day passes to walk-ins. To guarantee your spot and ensure you can return as planned, booking through your hotel the day before is a non-negotiable rule of island travel.
VSIndependent vs Organized Tour
| Criteria | Independent (Recommended) | Organized Tour |
|---|---|---|
| Freedom | Total control. Stop where you want, stay as long as you like. | Fixed schedule. Follow the group at every turn. |
| Cost | Approx. 700k–900k VND (incl. transport, bike, fuel). | From 750k VND (incl. transport, lunch). |
| Experience | A dense, personal exploration of hidden alleys and cliffs. | A pre-packaged experience from start to finish. You’re herded to set group restaurants and have no say in where you stop, when you rest, or which hidden alley you explore. * Note: The rigid, minute-by-minute group schedule can be a source of stress, undermining the island's natural sense of freedom. |
“Go independent for total freedom. But if it's your first time and you're feeling unsure, a tour is a decent way to get your bearings.”
⛵For the Veteran Traveler: The Charm of the Wooden Boat
If you are a traveler who isn't seeking efficiency, there is another way: the “Wooden Boat.” There is almost no official schedule; these boats depart quietly from the base of old bridges in Hoi An or the corners of Cua Dai Port, carrying supplies and locals.
The journey takes 2 hours. A distance that a speedboat covers in 30 minutes, the wooden boat traverses slowly with a steady engine drone. However, those 120 minutes might be exactly what you need to feel the true pulse of Cham Island as a former maritime silk road hub.
※ Note: Choosing this for a day trip will leave you with very little time on the island. It is a luxury reserved for those staying overnight.
03 The Blue Haven: A Complete Beach Guide
XEP Beach
The Abyss of Azure. Pristine nature at its absolute finest.
Beach entrance from road
Vivid blue shoreline
As part of a strictly protected marine reserve, you won't find any shops, toilets, or showers here. All that exists is the sound of the wind, the rhythm of the waves, and the dense emerald forest blanketing the island.
It's about a 15-minute walk from the main pier. The moment this breathtaking view emerges after a short trek through a gentle paved slope, you'll know why this island is a must-visit destination.
Runner's Tips & Advice
Bãi Ong
Comfort Meets Openness. The island's most well-equipped beach.
Ultramarine shoreline
A 15-minute walk along the coastal road from the pier brings you here. On your way, you'll pass through inlets crowded with colorful traditional Vietnamese wooden fishing boats, a sight that evokes the rustic soul of island life.
If your priority is relaxing with full facilities, Bãi Ong is the 'correct' choice. The water is exceptionally clear with almost no rocks or seaweed, making it safe and enjoyable for families and groups.
Runner's Tips & Advice
Bai Xep (South Side)
A quiet stretch beyond the main pier. Silence and white sand.
Beach through the greenery
Expansive shoreline
A 20-minute walk from the pier, the slightly longer distance keeps the crowds at bay. Here, you have the luxury of enjoying a vast, beautiful sandy beach almost entirely to yourself.
Visit here when you want to completely disconnect from the world and surrender yourself to the sound of the ocean.
Runner's Tips & Advice
Bãi Chồng (Stone Giant Beach)
Laid-Back Luxury. The island's largest beach with full resort facilities.
Resort-style relaxation
Vast beach panorama
It's too far to walk from the main pier, so a motorbike or boat is necessary. Since speedboats can dock directly here, it's often the base for many organized tours.
While it boasts the most parasols and the widest beach area, keep in mind that it can get busy when tour groups arrive. Also, the water clarity, while high, might feel slightly more modest compared to the untouched beauty of XEP Beach.

04 Island Transport: Motorbike & Epic Roads
Motorbike Rental Survival Guide
To truly explore Cham Island, a motorbike is your only real option. You won't find dedicated rental shops; instead, most bikes are rented out by local restaurants or family-run guesthouses (nhà nghỉ).
⚠️ Don't Trust Google Maps 100%
Markers labeled “Motorbike Rental” on the map might lead to nowhere. When in doubt, ask the locals at a nearby family-run guesthouse. Tell them you're looking for a bike, and they'll likely pull one out from the back of their house.
Pricing & Negotiation
- Full Day: Approx. 200,000 VND (~$8 USD)
- Half Day (e.g., until 1 PM): 70,000 – 100,000 VND
※ Prices might start high. Don't be afraid to negotiate, especially if you have limited time.
💡 Runner’s Experience
I struggled to find a formal rental shop, so I ended up asking at a local family-run guesthouse (nhà nghỉ). They quickly rented me a bike for 200k VND. Looking back, I could have probably negotiated for less since I only needed it for a few hours, but these small interactions are what make island travel authentic.
Cliffside Views Accessible Only by Bike
The Northern Loop. Where the turquoise ocean meets jagged cliffs.
With the South China Sea on your right and dramatic mountain faces on your left, it's an incredible drive. I can confidently say that riding this route alone makes a trip to Cham Island worthwhile.
Eo Gió (Windy Cape)
🚲 Access Note
Follow the “Eo Gió” signs from the pier. Note that while Google Maps shows a full loop through the fishing village, the northern part of the village road is often blocked (likely for military zones). Most visitors will need to backtrack the same way they came.
Lighthouse Panorama
⚠️ Access Warning
The lighthouse building itself is fenced off and typically closed to the public. You can enjoy the views from the vicinity, but don't expect to go inside.
05 Fishing Villages & Island Life
The Silence of Bãi Hương: A Glimpse into the Past
The quieter side of the island. Authenticity away from the pier.
This sleepy fishing village keeps a slow pace, with an atmosphere of total tranquility. The village itself is compact—a single street that can be walked in under five minutes—yet it's dense with the authentic texture of coastal life. From the smell of drying laundry to the distant laughter of locals, Bãi Hương offers a rare look at an island that hasn't changed in decades.
Life Along the Main Street
This is “Island Time” in its purest form. Grabbing a cold drink and watching the ocean from a simple wooden chair offers a sense of peace that digital life simply cannot provide.
The Original Coastal Scene
In the early morning or at dusk, you'll see fishermen tending to their nets, a scene of timeless labor that highlights the island's connection to the sea. This is the original landscape of Cham Island, unchanged and honest.
Riding through this quiet village, I had an unexpected encounter. As I slowed down near a group of locals, an older woman suddenly called out “Oi!” and gestured toward my bike.
Despite the language barrier, it was clear she needed a lift. She hop on the back of my bike without a second's hesitation, and I ended up as a voluntary “free taxi” for the next 6km back to the main pier. Her laughter drifting over my shoulder, casual and completely unbothered—that was the moment I understood what travel is really for.
