[Field Report] 2 Best Running Routes in Hoi An!World Heritage Streets & River Breezes

An honest island guide, earned with my own two feet.
Hoi An, the gateway to Cham Island. Capturing its historic streets through a runner’s eyes.

Why Run in Hoi An Old Town?

🏮 Silence of a UNESCO Site without Crowds

Hoi An Old Town is packed with tourists from all over the world during the day. However, if you start running at dawn, you will find a completely different face of the city.
Dark alleys with swaying lanterns, and yellow walls gradually brightening with the sunrise. Having this silence all to yourself is a privilege reserved for early morning runners alone.

🚶 Start with a “Walking Warm-up” in the Center

Even in the early morning, the heart of the Old Town is busy with motorbikes heading to the market and people preparing to open shops. It’s common for sidewalks to be blocked by parked motorbikes.
The smart move is to treat the central area as a “warm-up walk” while gazing at the historical buildings. As you move towards the outskirts, the crowds thin out, and you can increase your pace comfortably.

🚣 Rhythm of the Water City

Running along the Thu Bon River, you’ll hear the sound of small boats heading to the morning market and see locals starting their day by the bank.
Feeling the “living atmosphere” that isn’t in official guidebooks is the true pleasure of running in Hoi An.

  • At the turnaround point near the base of the larger Cầu Cẩm Kim bridge, there is a local market. Completely tourist-free, it brims with raw local energy — a genuine glimpse of everyday life you won’t find in any guidebook.

  • Entering the side streets of Cam Nam Island from the Old Town immediately changes the vibe. As tourists disappear and pure local scenery takes over, the comfort might make you forget the time.
  • Be careful near the Hoi An Impression Theme Park area, as some paths require admission. It’s best to keep to the outer island roads for a smooth run.
  • The Cầu Thanh Nam bridge at the turnaround offers great views and a very refreshing breeze. Highly recommended during sunset when the sky turns orange.
  • After crossing the bridge, the second half opens up into flat riverside roads perfect for picking up the pace. With less traffic and many stylish cafes along the riverside, it’s a great spot for a luxury break.
  • After finishing, head to the stalls near Hoi An Market. Mountains of tropical fruit and freshly-pressed juices make the perfect post-run recovery.

3 Pro Tips Before You Run

🏃 1. Finish by 7:00 AM

Hoi An’s heat and crowds are beyond imagination. Spend an hour before breakfast and return to your base before the city fully wakes up for the best experience.

🦟 2. Bug Spray is Essential

Rivers and trees increase significantly outside the Old Town. Especially in local areas like Cam Kim Island, mosquitoes are active. Don’t forget repellent before you start.

🗺️ 3. Enjoy Getting Lost

The alleys of Cam Nam are maze-like, but as long as you head back towards the river, you’ll find your way back to the Old Town. Trust your senses more than GPS in Hoi An.
