Think You Can’t Run the Coast in Ishigaki?
I Found the Answer

🌴 Why Finding a Coastal Route in Ishigaki is Surprisingly Hard

Before arriving in Ishigaki, many runners imagine endless coastal runs. However, despite being an island, much of the coastline is hidden behind dense windbreaks or the roads simply cut inland. Finding a continuous path with an unobstructed ocean view turns out to be surprisingly rare.

But I’m Glad I Didn’t Give Up

After exploring numerous routes, I’ve discovered the definitive “Scenic Ocean View Course” and a soothing route that captures the essence of island life.

  • An exceptional course with breathtaking ocean views throughout.
  • Quiet paths where you’ll encounter local cats and cattle—pure island vibes.
  • Fully paved routes, ensuring a comfortable experience for beginners.

1. 730 Memorial to Ryukyu Kannonsaki Lighthouse (Out-and-Back)

A 12km journey starting from the iconic “730 Court” in the town center, heading towards the stunning western coastline. Once you cross the bridge over the Arakawa River, you enter a world where the sound of the waves takes center stage. While some sections aren’t shown on Google Maps, a well-maintained paved coastal path allows for a seamless run. Enjoy the unobstructed “Blue World” to your heart’s content.

  • A pro tip for the town center: duck away from the main road and weave through the back alleys to feel the local atmosphere before heading towards the Arakawa River bridge.
  • While there aren’t sandy beaches directly on this path, the privilege of running on a paved road just inches from the water’s edge is unique to this course. The exhilaration of the sea breeze is unmatched.
  • You’re very likely to encounter local cats lounging near Funakura Park. Taking a moment to rest and watch them is one of the true joys of island running. The park also has clean restrooms and ample parking.
  • Note that there are no vending machines at the destination, Ryukyu Kannonsaki Lighthouse. For a smart pit stop, use the vending machines at the “Tojinbaka” (Chinese Tomb) located just across the street.
  • For those staying at nearby hotels like Fusaki Beach Resort, making the round trip to Funakura Park (about 6km) a daily habit is highly recommended. It’s the perfect pre-breakfast workout with the sea by your side.
  • Despite what Google Maps might show, the entire route is concrete-paved and easy to run. As this is a peaceful area cherished by locals, please run with a “guest mindset” — you’re a welcome visitor in a quiet, local space.

📐 5km / Loop
🅿️ Near 730 Court or Nan-nu-hama Seaside Park (Free)

2. Southern Gate Bridge & Cat-Friendly Nan-nu-hama Route

A 5km loop starting from the “730 Court”, crossing the majestic Southern Gate Bridge to reach the feline paradise of Nan-nu-hama Town (Paihama-cho). A popular route loved for its panoramic bridge views and the friendly cats that roam the park.

  • Located just a stone’s throw from Ishigaki’s downtown. The convenience factor alone is a huge draw — you can slot in a run between dinner reservations or any gap in your itinerary. The panoramic view from the bridge makes it a highly rewarding short-distance route.
  • While Nan-nu-hama Seaside Park has restrooms, it lacks vending machines. For hydration, head to the seasonal “Nan-nu-hama Artificial Beach” building. Note that the management building and its vending machines are entirely closed outside of business hours.
  • Sunset is the prime time for this course. Running toward the sun dipping below the horizon, then seeing the city lights begin to twinkle as you return across the bridge... that’s when this course truly comes into its own.
  • After total darkness, the park area has very few streetlights and is too dark for safe running. After enjoying the night view from the bridge, plan to return to the safety of the city lights.

📐 6km / Loop

3. Taketomi Island Scenic Loop Course

Just a 15-minute ferry ride from Ishigaki. This 6km loop takes you through traditional red-tiled villages, white sand paths, and past local cattle. Visiting major spots like the West Pier and Kondoi Beach, it strikes the perfect balance between sightseeing and island running — and neither one suffers for it.

Taketomi Village

Red-tiled roofs and white sand paths. The primordial scenery of Taketomi feels as if time has stood still.

Coastal path from Kondoi to Kaiji Beach

The stretch from Kondoi to Kaiji Beach is the most luxurious moment of this course.

Path surrounded by vegetation

Leaving the village, you enter a world of dense, tropical greenery.

West Pier (Nishi-sanbashi)

The West Pier stretches straight into the sea—a perfect reward for finishing your run.

  • The “Hoshi-michi” (Pasture Path) leading from the port to the village. Here, you can see cattle grazing peacefully, offering a quintessentially “island life” view the moment you arrive.
  • Pro tip: veer off the main village road and explore the back alleys of white sand. This “wander-as-you-run” approach — ducking into a local café for a cold drink or shaved ice — is the real spirit of Taketomi.
  • The loop road surrounding the village is enveloped in dense tropical greenery. While it lacks flashy vistas, the silence and unique atmosphere of the “Plant Tunnel” allow for a deeply immersive running experience.
  • From Kondoi to Kaiji Beach, try moving along the shoreline instead of the road. Treading on white sand while listening to the waves is undoubtedly the highlight of the trip.
  • You may occasionally see open clearings by the roadside; these are often sacred “Utaki” (shrines). Please show respect—do not enter or make noise—and move past quietly, with a moment of acknowledgment.
  • Note that there are no vending machines outside of the main village. Prepare your hydration at the port or village beforehand. Local buses are also available if the tropical heat becomes too intense.

3 Key Points to Know Before You Run

☀️ 1. Sun Protection & Hydration

The sun here is no joke. Many courses lack shade, so always choose early morning or late afternoon for your run. Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

🐱 2. Respect the Local Wildlife

The cats in Nan-nu-hama Town and the cattle on Taketomi Island may look calm, but they can be dangerous if startled. Please observe them gently, maintain a respectful distance, and pass by quietly.

🚢 3. Traveling Light to Taketomi

While ferries to Taketomi are frequent, it’s best to run with minimal gear. Use the coin lockers at Ishigaki Port and just bring your phone and a little cash — that’s all you need.
