Field-Tested: 4 Best MiyakoIsland Running Courses

An honest island guide — earned with your own two feet.
Experience the breathtaking “Miyako Blue” on these carefully selected routes.

Why Miyako Island Deserves a Place on Every Runner’s Bucket List

💎 Miyako Blue: Beyond Ordinary Okinawan Waters

While Okinawa is home to many beautiful beaches, the transparency of Miyako Island is in a league of its own.
Known as “Miyako Blue,” the water displays an infinite gradient from emerald green to deep cobalt depending on the angle of light. The water is so clear that you can see fish silhouettes several meters below the surface.
The ultimate privilege of running here is having all this breathtaking beauty entirely to yourself.

🌊 A Rare Opportunity for Coastal Running

Did you know that long-distance coastal running is surprisingly difficult to find even in mainland Okinawa or other outlying islands?

  • 1.Lack of roads directly tracing the coastline (obstructed by sand dunes or cliffs).
  • 2.Roads often have windbreaks or trees that hide the view of the sea.

However, Miyako Island is dotted with courses where you can run with an unobstructed, “panoramic view of the sea” at all times.

🌉 The Sensation of Floating Over Coral Reefs

Miyako Island is connected to Ikema, Kurima, and Irabu islands by magnificent long bridges that create a truly unique experience.
The exhilaration of being surrounded 360 degrees by the ocean gives you the literal sensation of “running on water.” With the expansive blue sky above and sparkling coral reefs below, this feeling of weightlessness is something you won’t find anywhere else.

⚠️ Safety Warning: Irabu Bridge

Although Irabu Bridge is the longest at 3,540m, it does not have a designated sidewalk.
While there is some space between the car lane and the edge, it is narrow and frequently used by large trucks and sightseeing buses. Due to the high risk and inability to focus on your run, we strongly recommend crossing by car to enjoy the view safely.

🅿️ Maehama Noson Park (Free)

1. Kurima Bridge to Ryugu Castle Observatory

A 5.5km route that takes you across the 1,690m Kurima Bridge to the Ryugu Castle Observatory perched on a hill. A luxurious path offering dual panoramic views of the ocean and the island.

Runner's VoiceField Impression
  • The 1,690m Kurima Bridge offers a unique sense of floating, bringing you even closer to the sea than Ikema Bridge. The sidewalks are well-maintained and safe.
  • The starting point at “Maehama Noson Park” has clean restrooms. The ones at Ryugu Castle Observatory are quite “wild,” so it’s best to take care of business here.
  • There’s a vending machine at the Ryugu Castle Observatory after the steep climb. Treat yourself to a drink while soaking in the majestic view—a truly luxurious reward.
  • After your run, follow the hidden path next to the park restrooms. It leads to a “private beach” away from the crowds, perfect for a peaceful cool-down.
  • The “Kurima Bridge Observatory” on the village side is a hidden gem only runners usually find. Enjoy a private, side-on view of the bridge from the heights.
  • To reach the crystal-clear “Kurima Fishing Port Beach,” I recommend taking the “Pacha Stone Steps.” It feels like an island exploration leading to a secret paradise.

🅿️ Karimata Parking (Free)

2. Ikema Bridge Round-trip

Arguably the most beautiful course in Miyako. You’ll run across the 1,425m Ikema Bridge. Gliding across 360 degrees of Miyako Blue feels like a dream—this is a runner’s paradise unlike anything else.

Runner's VoiceField Impression
  • Personally, this is my favorite course. It’s the ideal loop with non-stop scenic views, local rest spots, and a beach you can jump into at the end.
  • “Karimata Parking” is convenient, but be warned that the restrooms are long-term closed. If full, try Ikema Fishing Port. Avoid parking at the busy “Kaimiru” just for jogging.
  • The best routine is to use “Kaimiru” (rest area) across the bridge for a restroom and hydration break as your turnaround point.
  • The popular “Ohama Beach” has surprising depth. Even if the entrance is busy, walking a bit further reveals a private space to enjoy the blue exclusively.
  • The 360-degree openness and the sea breeze while running over the emerald green waters will likely be a highlight of your running life.

🅿️ Sawada-no-hama Parking (Free)

3. Sawada-no-hama to 17END Round-trip

An 8km journey from the mystic “Sawada-no-hama” to the stunning “17END” beach beside Shimojishima Airport’s runway. Enjoy the changing scenery and the chance to see planes taking off and landing.

Runner's VoiceField Impression
  • The 8km distance is longer, but you’ll never get bored as the scenery shifts. The surge of excitement when the 17END jetty finally comes into view is something you’ll never forget.
  • Be aware that there are no public restrooms in the area, not even around Sawada-no-hama. It’s vital to take care of needs in town before heading out.
  • I recommend parking at “Irabu Baseball Field.” It has a large lot on the side nearing Sawada-no-hama, ensuring you’ll find a spot even when beach lots are full.
  • Vending machines are only near Sawada-no-hama. 17END is beautiful but completely exposed with no facilities, so carrying a bottle is a must.
  • Running slowly allows you to observe the traditional “Nagaki” stone fishing weirs up close—a privilege denied to those in fast-moving vehicles.
  • With zero shade, heatstroke is a serious risk in sunny weather. Check “Flightradar24” to time your run with aircraft schedules for the best experience.

📐 3km / Loop
🅿️ Sunset Beach (Free)

Runner's VoiceField Impression
  • The road surface is exceptional. While it may look unpaved on some maps, it’s actually smooth asphalt perfectly suited for a training environment.
  • Although there is a management building at Sunset Beach, there are no public restrooms. Make sure to use your hotel’s facilities before starting.
  • Facing west, you can enjoy two faces: the purest blue in the morning light, or a soul-stirring run chasing the sun as it sinks into the horizon.
  • Avoid running on the nearby Irabu Bridge itself. It lacks sidewalks and has dangerous traffic levels; cross it by car instead to enjoy the view safely.
  • The river section is quiet and shielded from wind. The contrast between the open sea and mindful silence in 3km is concentrated and refreshing.
  • After the run, the Sunset Beach steps are the best place for a cool-down. Hilton guests have the privilege of relaxing poolside immediately after.

3 Things Every Runner Should Know Before Hitting the Road

👟 1. Fully Paved & Flat

All four featured courses are paved and relatively flat. Even beginners can run comfortably in standard road shoes. Major roads are equipped with sidewalks for your safety.

🚗 2. Rental Car is Essential

Public transportation is limited, so a rental car or bike is indispensable for reaching the starting points. Free parking is available at every course location.

💨 3. Mind the Sea Breeze!

Miyako Island is known for strong winds, especially on the bridges. Expect your heart rate to climb when facing head-winds. If it’s too gusty, aim for early morning or stay flexible with your route choice.

03 FAQ

Q

What should I keep in mind when running on Miyako Island?

A
The wind is often strong, especially on the bridges. Aim for early morning or be flexible with your route if it's too gusty. Also, sun protection and hydration are essential as there is little shade.
Q

Can I run across Irabu Bridge?

A
Irabu Bridge (3,540m) does not have a sidewalk. The space between the road and the edge is narrow, and large buses or trucks pass frequently. It is dangerous and not recommended for running; we strongly suggest crossing by car instead.
Q

Is there bus access to the starting points?

A
Public transport is infrequent. We highly recommend using a rental car or motorcycle. Each course featured has a free parking lot nearby.
Q

Where are the restrooms on each course?

A
It varies by course. Kurima Bridge has clean restrooms at Maehama Noson Park. For Ikema Bridge, use 'Kaimiru' across the bridge (Karimata lot is closed). For the 17END and Hilton routes, facilities are limited, so use your hotel's restrooms before heading out.
