✈️ Getting There

Flights from Major Cities

Naha (approx. 40 mins) / Kagoshima (approx. 1 hour 35 mins)*Operated by JAL Group (RAC/JAC)

Ferries from Okinawa / Kagoshima

Naha (approx. 5 hours) / Motobu (approx. 2.5 hours) / Kagoshima (approx. 20 hours)*Operated daily by Marix Line / A-Line Ferry alternately

Access Advice
Flying from Naha is the quickest and most straightforward option, but the overnight ferry is a journey in itself — a classic way to arrive at a remote island. Leaving Naha Port in the morning gets you to Yoron Island by early afternoon.

☀️ Best Season

Late June – October
This is the best season to enjoy the ocean. The period immediately after the rainy season ends, from late June to early July, is the ultimate timing when the sea sparkles the most and the likelihood of Yurigahama’s appearance is highest.

🌙 Duration

2 Nights, 3 Days or more
While you can circle the island in a single day, the ironclad rule of Yoron travel is to adjust your stay to match the timing of Yurigahama’s appearance (tide levels). Planning a relaxed 2-to-3-night stay is highly recommended.

💰 Budget

¥60,000–¥100,000 /person (3 Days, 2 Nights)
*Estimated budget including round-trip transport, car rental, accommodation, and food.

🚗 Transportation

Car rental is highly recommended.
Although the island is compact with a circumference of about 23km, bus services are limited, and major beaches are scattered in places difficult to access without a car. Since availability is limited, contact rental shops directly and book early — ideally at the same time you book your accommodation.

🌊 Book Marine Activities

Yurigahama boat tours and snorkeling experiences fill up quickly during the peak season. It is recommended to secure your bookings around the same time you book your hotel.

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Yurigahama may or may not appear depending on the ebbs and flows of the tide. Advance confirmation is essential, so please refer to the Beach Guide Page for details. In addition, the appearing times vary by day. Boat tours are generally scheduled around these times, but checking the time slot yourself is a key tip for Yoron sightseeing.
  • 💳
Many local shops and diners still do not accept credit cards. Be sure to arrive with plenty of cash.
  • 📍
As a sister city to Mykonos, Greece, white buildings and monuments are dotted throughout the town. Wandering through the maze-like backstreets without your smartphone is a classic way to enjoy this island.
  • Except for parts of the villages, streetlights are extremely sparse at night. You may encounter rare creatures on the dark roads, so please drive carefully.

FAQ

Q

Do I need a rental car in Yoron Island?

A
Yes, it is highly recommended. Although the island is compact at about 20km around, it has many ups and downs, and major beaches and sightseeing spots are scattered. Having a rental car or rental motorcycle will allow you to explore efficiently.
Q

Can I see Yurigahama Beach at any time?

A
No, Yurigahama is a sandbar that appears depending on the tide, so the seasons and times it can be seen are limited. The key is to plan your visit during the low tide of a spring tide.
Q

What is the recommended length of stay?

A
A 2-night, 3-day stay is standard, but to fully enjoy the island’s slow pace and reliably see Yurigahama Beach, which is easily affected by the weather, a 3-night, 4-day stay is ideal.
Q

How do I access Yoron Island?

A
By air, there are regular flights from Naha Airport (approx. 40 mins) and Kagoshima Airport (approx. 1 hour 35 mins). Ferries from Okinawa Main Island (Naha/Motobu) and Amami Oshima also run daily, taking about 5 hours from Naha and 2.5 hours from Motobu.
Q

Can I run a full loop around the island?

A
Yes, it is possible. The road around the island is about 20km with no traffic lights. However, since much of the road passes inland or through windbreaks, you will not always see the ocean. The real charm of running in Yoron lies in the rhythm of the hills, the sugarcane fields swaying in the sea breeze, and glimpses of Yoron Blue breaking through when you least expect it. As some areas have steep slopes, we recommend running during the cooler morning or evening hours with plenty of water.
Q

Can I use credit cards or electronic money?

A
While they are accepted at major hotels and some new cafes, many locally owned restaurants and shops still only accept cash. Cash is often required for taxis, small shops, and activities, so we highly recommend bringing plenty of cash before arriving on the island.
