Yoron Island Beach Guide:
From Yurigahama to Hidden Gems

Traveling across Japan’s islands,
I realized this is the most beautiful beach.
The complete guide compiled from five years of riding a scooter.

No other guide covers more beaches than this.

Through years of island-hopping across Japan, I have experienced countless beaches — and Yoron Island's shores are, without question, the most beautiful I have ever seen. No other guide covers this many beaches with photos — and I've visited every single one of them.

Yoron Island’s beaches are rarely crowded. There is no need to hide away in secret spots right from the start; the best approach is to fully enjoy the classic beaches like Ooganeku Beach and Yurigahama Beach first.

For sightseeing, a rental car or scooter is essential. I especially recommend a scooter — nothing beats feeling the sea breeze and the island's scent firsthand. Soak in the local atmosphere and take your time exploring the hidden beaches scattered across the island.

Yurigahama Beach

A miraculous paradise of unbelievable beauty that you must visit once in a lifetime.

Once you arrive on Yoron Island, make this your top destination. The pure white sandbar appears only during low tide, surrounded by crystal-clear blue waters. Its beauty cannot be fully captured in photos—it must be experienced with all five senses to be truly understood. The moment you step off the boat and onto the sand, an overwhelming rush of joy will stay with you long after the trip ends. Check the appearance schedule on the Yoron Island Tourism Association website in advance, and aim for a day with the best tidal conditions.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Not accessible individually. Must join a boat tour
  • ✔︎Check the appearance schedule in advance
  • ✔︎No shade at all. Complete sunburn protection is essential

Ooganeku Beach

Ooganeku Beach

Rank: S

An overwhelming emerald green stretching to the horizon. The ultimate main beach that defines Yoron Island.

As Yoron’s largest beach, its transparency easily outshines any other famous beach in Japan. The pure white sand stretching for over a kilometer and the shallow emerald waters create a scene truly worthy of the word “paradise.” Serving as the gateway to Yurigahama, it is well-equipped with toilets and showers. Simply sitting here and gazing out at the sea is enough to wash away the weight of everyday life.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Equipped with toilets, showers, shops, and restaurants
  • ✔︎Gateway for Yurigahama tours; same-day bookings are possible
  • ✔︎No shade. Strong sun protection and hydration are essential

An absorbing blue world almost too luxurious to keep all to yourself.

Located on the east side of the island, its deep emerald colors are distinct from Ooganeku Beach and will take your breath away. On calm days, the surface of the water reflects the sky like a giant gem. It is a popular spot for SUP and other marine activities, and it is not uncommon to spot sea turtles swimming close by. You haven't truly seen Yoron's sea until you've witnessed this deep, living blue.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Parking available (slope down next to the boat dock)
  • ✔︎Toilets and showers available (vending machines nearby)
  • ✔︎No shops or shade. Sun protection is essential
  • ✔︎Calm waves make it perfect for marine activities

Seaman’s Beach

Seaman’s Beach

Rank: S

East side’s top transparency, suddenly appearing along the peripheral road.

Located just south of Ooganeku Beach, this spot is rarely visited, allowing you to enjoy the same top-tier ocean quality in absolute silence. It is the only spot on the island where the ocean suddenly opens up before you as you ride along the road. Approaching from the south near Yui-no-Oka, the trees suddenly part to reveal a stunning expanse of blue — you'll catch your breath before you even realize it. Facilities are usable when booking through the Seaman’s Club.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Located south of Ooganeku Beach. A quiet and calm setting
  • ✔︎The breathtaking moment when the sea opens up from the road is a must-see
  • ✔︎Parking, toilets, and showers are usable for Seaman’s Club guests
  • ✔︎Club restrooms are a bit outdated; keep this in mind

Savor the premium sand of Ooganeku with zero crowds.

Located north of Ooganeku Beach, this silent shore is rarely visited. It shares the same top-tier sea quality as Ooganeku Beach but allows you to enjoy it in complete privacy. There is a small rocky overhang to the south that provides a shaded retreat from the sun. If you do not mind the lack of public facilities, this is a flawless, top-rank beach.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎No shops or vending machines
  • ✔︎No parking (requires some planning to access)
  • ✔︎Enjoy the same quality of sea as Ooganeku Beach in quiet solitude
  • ✔︎Shade under the southern rocks is a big plus

A casual paradise you can easily walk to from the town.

Though located within walking distance of the central town, the water quality remains spectacularly clean. Its main appeal is the ease of walking down to look at the sea whenever you feel like a stroll. The access path is narrow and a bit hard to find, but there is parking for about four cars (temporary stalls may open in summer).

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Accessible by foot from the town area
  • ✔︎Toilets available; showers and shops require verification
  • ✔︎The access road is very narrow, so drive with care
  • ✔︎An ideal location for a casual stroll

Near the airport. A perfect stroll after enjoying local Mozuku Soba.

Being extremely close to the airport, it is perfect for a stroll while waiting for your flight. Accessible by walking past the side and back of the restaurant “Aoi Sangosho” (which serves delicious Mozuku Soba and dumplings—a must-try). The sea is beautiful, but because the access runs through what feels like the restaurant's private grounds, it is better suited for scenic strolls rather than serious swimming.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Located near the airport, ideal for a quick visit before your flight
  • ✔︎No shops on the beach itself
  • ✔︎The food at the adjacent restaurant “Aoi Sangosho” is delicious
  • ✔︎Recommended for enjoying the scenery and dining rather than swimming

Kanemo Beach (Sunset Beach)

Kanemo Beach

Rank: Resort

Resort sophistication meets the golden magic hour.

Located within the premises of Pricia Resort Yoron, this resort beach is mainly used by hotel guests. It offers the most refined resort vibe on the island, attracting crowds in the evening to watch the sun set over the horizon. While the sea here is gorgeous, I strongly encourage you to make time for Ooganeku Beach on the east side — the blue there is in a league of its own.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Mainly used by guests of Pricia Resort
  • ✔︎A popular spot offering beautiful sunset views
  • ✔︎Well-maintained resort environment

The go-to spot for snorkeling.

A convenient beach equipped with toilets, showers, parking, and a food stall, making it highly popular for snorkeling. While the sea is beautiful, it might look slightly less vibrant compared to the overwhelming blues of Ooganeku and Minata. Since it is located furthest from the main town, snorkeling enthusiasts should prioritize it, while others can visit when time permits.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Equipped with toilets, showers, and shops
  • ✔︎Highly recommended for snorkeling purposes
  • ✔︎Far from the main town, requiring more travel time

A peaceful space for evening chats where local life blends in.

There are no toilets, showers, or shops here, but parking is available. Rather than a place to seek “breath-taking ocean clarity,” it is best enjoyed as a stroll after dining in the downtown area. As the sun sets, local children gather near the shore to chat and enjoy the cool breeze.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎Very close to the town area. Perfect for an evening stroll
  • ✔︎No shops or facilities
  • ✔︎Experience the sunset alongside the daily life of locals

Aside from the main beaches mentioned above, Yoron Island is dotted with numerous nameless sandy shores and tiny beaches.

Descending a small hidden staircase hidden in the roadside vegetation reveals this highly secretive beach. Since there is no parking, a scooter or bicycle is essential. Located close to the port, you can watch large ferries pass by from a very close distance.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎No parking. Scooter or bicycle is highly recommended
  • ✔︎The hidden staircase can be slippery, so watch your step

If you want to gaze at the ocean in peace, touring these shores on a scooter is the way to go.

Yoron Island is dotted with beautiful sandy beaches such as Shina Beach, Hakibina Beach, Watanji Coast, and Maehama Beach. Because the main beaches are so exceptionally high-tier, these are treated as “hidden gems,” but if you want to enjoy the sea in complete tranquility, touring these spots by scooter is highly recommended.

💡 Tips & Highlights

  • ✔︎A collective term for multiple shores including Shina, Hakibina, Watanji, and Maehama
  • ✔︎Recommended to explore along the coast by scooter
  • ✔︎No facilities available, but offers the best privacy

Strategy Tips

Timing is Everything for Privacy

  • Weekday mornings give you the best shot at having even the most popular beaches entirely to yourself.
  • Even in peak season, early morning hours will help you avoid the crowds.
  • Ooganeku Beach is busiest between 10 AM and 2 PM, around the times of Yurigahama tours.
  • Late afternoon (5–6 PM) is another golden window — most tourists have gone by then, leaving the beach to you.

🚗 Secure Your Transportation

Yoron Island has a circumference of about 23km. While you can tour all beaches by rental car or scooter, vehicles are limited on the island and fill up early in peak season. I recommend securing your transport alongside your hotel.

⚠️ Manners and Safety

  • Always bring your trash back. Most locations do not have trash bins.
  • Do not take coral or seashells home (it may violate local ordinances).
  • Swimming at beaches without lifeguards is at your own risk.
  • Summer sun is extremely intense. Always apply sunscreen and stay hydrated.

🌊 Marine Activity Reservations

Tours for snorkeling, Yurigahama, and SUP fill up quickly during the peak season (July–August). I recommend scheduling them alongside your hotel bookings.
